In footage that surfaced Monday, Hegseth teases the next segment by throwing an ax at the target, but the ax misses and flies over, punching the arm of a bystander instead. The victim, part of West Point’s Hellcats marching band, was playing a drum routine nearby in honor of Flag Day.
Though the televised broadcast didn’t show all of the incident, the iPhone footage above shows the minute of impact.
On June 20, the victim Jim Prosperie posted around the incident on his Facebook page, writing, “I became hit by an axe while performing a drum solo last National TV … words I never imagined saying! This happened last Sunday and that i are actually reluctant to post but beginning receive inquiries from concerned family. I am fiberglass mesh thankful to God that the double sided blade only hit broadside about the outer elbow with significant impact along with a couple of cuts mainly because it fell along my wrist. It might happen to be much worse or fatal. Working on full emotional and physical recovery."
He added, "My leadership told me we were looking at told there'd be no axe throwing. I think the anchor person went rogue and thought we would throw it. He only thrown it once before used with an upcoming segment and so they told him to throw it with an increase of force. The vid the thing is is edited showing the Televised area of the throw so edited to some portion that was taken on someone’s phone of people being videoed. The part which was actually televised showed the overthrown axe after which it segued to us to the drum solo bump, only showing me walking behind the section holding my arm. Your part the spot that the axe hit me has not been televised. Poor decision, obvious negligence, shouldn't have happened, might have been avoided.
